Greasy, greasy, and dull hair is a common problem that can cause discomfort and annoyance: here are the causes and remedies to combat this problem
Hair is often an important part that distinguishes our person: depending on how we cut it, color it, or style it it can communicate a lot about us and our style. Also for this reason, having greasy, heavy, and dirty hair, even if only in appearance, can undoubtedly create severe inconveniences and annoyances, which can also affect our daily lives. Fortunately, however, there are numerous remedies thanks to which we can restore our hair to its natural beauty and lightness. So let’s find out what are the causes that make hair greasy and the best remedies to get rid of this annoying problem.
The causes of greasy hair
Greasy hair is easily recognizable, because it appears greasy, dull, flattened, weighed down, and gets dirty quickly and very easily, even immediately after washing; furthermore, it may be accompanied by dandruff, bad odor, and/or itching.
The cause of greasy hair is seborrhea, which is the excessive production of sebum by the sebaceous glands located on the scalp. Sebum is a substance naturally produced by these glands for protective purposes, to make the skin soft and hydrate it, thus preventing it from drying out and cracking, and to lubricate and soften the hair;Â however, hormonal imbalances or other factors can influence the activity of the sebaceous glands, resulting in excessive sebum production and its consequent accumulation on the scalp and along the hair.
Additionally, other factors can worsen the condition of greasy hair, including:
- washing with aggressive products, which can excessively dry the scalp, leading to greater sebum production;
- washing with inappropriate products – if the hair is not cleansed with specific products it is possible that the excess sebum accumulates further and, with it, the impurities it traps, with the risk of altering the ecosystem of the scalp;
- the frequent and excessive use of styling products – hairsprays, gels, mousses, and, in general, all hair styling products, leave residues on the head which, if not eliminated regularly, contribute to weighing down the hair, making it flat and dull;
- pollution  –  greasy hair  traps dirt and impurities more easily, which is why exposure to a polluted environment contributes to worsening the appearance of the hair;
- often run your hands through your hair or brush it frequently – habits that help distribute excess sebum on the hair.
Remedies for greasy hair
The best remedy o combat the problem of hair is to use shampoo and conditioner specific to this problem and suitable for frequent use because to remove excess sebum it is best to wash your hair regularly, at least three times a week. In particular, the shampoos specifically created for oily hair make use of sebum-related detergents, i.e. capable of deeply cleansing the scalp and hair without altering the protective hydrolipidic film, and are enriched with skin-purifying, astringent, and sebum-normalizing substances, to purify the scalp and, at the same time, regulate sebaceous secretion.
Furthermore, it is also important to use the shampoo correctly, without exceeding the quantities, diluting it with water, avoiding too vigorous massages, and then rinsing the hair carefully. While drying, it is a good idea to gently pat your hair with a towel, without rubbing, and use the hairdryer at a medium temperature, keeping it away from the scalp.
Finally, to thoroughly purify the scalp, remove accumulations of impurities, stimulate circulation, and promote the growth of healthy and robust hair, it is a good idea to regularly perform a soothing and purifying scrub, even better if based on organic and natural ingredients.
Greasy hair and dandruff
Sometimes,  greasy hair can be associated with dandruff and/or itching. Itching can be one of the very first symptoms of dandruff, appearing even before scales, but it can derive from many different causes. Among the main causes of dandruff, however, we find the increased and or altered production of sebum, as in greasy hairÂ
In these cases, it is useful to use specific anti-dandruff shampoos for greasy hair, enriched with active antifungal ingredients (such as zinc pyrithione and selenium sulfide) and with refreshing substances that can help find immediate relief from itching, always to be used according to the instructions on the package.
